How to keep date plans private on iPhone
The reminder, the calendar event and the dating app each show up somewhere other people can see. Apple's own settings for all three, and where a private note fits
A date lives in three places on an iPhone: a reminder ("book a table for Friday"), a calendar event ("Dinner, 7:30") and the dating app itself. Each one shows up somewhere other people can see, and each has its own fix.
Keeping your dating life to yourself is a normal boundary, whether from a roommate who picks up your phone, family who glance at the shared iPad, or a coworker at lunch. It's about deciding for yourself who hears about your plans, and when.
Where it shows up
- The Lock Screen. A reminder's notification shows its words, a calendar alert shows the event, and the dating app's notifications arrive like any other app's
- Widgets. Apple's Lock Screen features page gives "an upcoming event in the Calendar widget" as its own example of what a widget shows whoever holds the phone; a Reminders widget does the same
- Shared calendars. Everyone a calendar is shared with sees its events, and Apple's Family Sharing page says a family group gets a shared calendar on everyone's devices automatically. A new event lands on whichever calendar is your default
- Calendar itself, on iOS 18 and later. Apple's Reminders guide says scheduled reminders now appear in the Calendar app alongside your events, so your week shows "flowers" next to the dinner
- Search and Siri. Spotlight finds reminders and events from a typed word; Calendar can feed Search, widgets and notifications
- Other devices and shared lists. iCloud puts the reminder on every device signed in to your Apple Account; a shared list shows it to everyone on it
What to do
- Keep the reminder on a list nobody else sees, and hide its preview. Apple's sharing page says people who accept a list invitation can add, delete and complete items, so use a list of your own. Then, per Apple's notification settings page, go to Settings, Notifications, Reminders, tap Show Previews and choose When Unlocked. More Lock Screen settings: a reminder popped up on your Lock Screen
- Choose where new events land. Go to Settings, Apps, Calendar, tap Default Calendar and pick one that is yours alone; Apple's Calendar settings page says new events go there automatically. To move an event already on a shared calendar, Apple's multiple calendars page says to tap the event, tap Calendar, then choose another. To keep reminders out of Calendar altogether, Apple's reminders in Calendar page says to tap Calendars and deselect Scheduled Reminders
- Check who a calendar is shared with. In Calendar, tap Calendars, tap the info button next to a shared calendar, then tap a person to turn off Allow Editing or remove them, per Apple's calendar sharing page
- Quiet Calendar's suggestions. Apple's Calendar settings page says that under Settings, Apps, Calendar, Siri, you decide whether Calendar learns from how you use it and whether its content appears in Search, widgets and notifications. Take the Calendar widget off your Lock Screen while you're there
- Lock, or hide, the dating app (iOS 18 and later). Touch and hold its icon, tap Require Face ID, then either Require Face ID again, or Hide and Require Face ID, authenticate, and tap Hide App. Apple's lock or hide an app page says a locked app's information won't appear in notification previews, search, Siri suggestions or CarPlay, and a hidden app moves from the Home Screen, App Library and search results to a Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library that needs Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open. The lock doesn't sync, so repeat it on an iPad
- Hide the purchase too. Apple's purchase list page: open the App Store, tap your photo, tap Apps & Purchase History, then Your Apps, swipe left on the app and tap Hide. With Family Sharing, family then can't redownload it from your shared purchases
- Keep it out of search. Apple's Spotlight page says to go to Settings, Search, tap an app and turn off Show App in Search; the path is the same on iOS 18
The catches
- The Hidden folder is not a secret. It sits at the bottom of App Library and opens with your passcode as well as Face ID, so anyone who knows the passcode can open it. If that's the issue, start with your partner knows your iPhone passcode
- Hidden apps still leave traces. Apple's Personal Safety guide lists where their names may still appear: Settings, Apps, Hidden Apps; Screen Time; Battery; and your App Store purchase history. Hiding the purchase takes it off the App Store list, but Apple says it stays in your complete purchase history in Settings
- Family Sharing has its own rules. Apple says children under 13 can't lock or hide apps, and for ages 13 to 17 a parent or guardian in the group can see that the app was downloaded and how much it's used
- Stopping a share can be seen. Apple's safety note warns participants may be notified when you stop sharing or delete a calendar; keeping new events on your own default calendar avoids the question
- Sync is still sync. The reminder and the event go to every device signed in to your Apple Account; for a shared iPad, see reminders on a family iPad
- Apple Reminders has no private reminder. Each setting above covers the whole app, not one note
If someone goes through your phone to control who you see, your safety comes before any setting here. The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 is free, confidential, open around the clock, and helps people plan safely.
Where Notif fits
The reminder is the part I can help with. In Notif, the reminders app I make on top of Apple Reminders, you mark the note about Friday private and leave your other reminders as they are. The box below says exactly what private means today, from the app itself. Notif is free on the App Store: get Notif.
Questions
Can I hide a dating app on my iPhone?
Yes, on iOS 18 and later. Touch and hold the app icon, tap Require Face ID, then Hide and Require Face ID, authenticate and tap Hide App. Apple says it leaves the Home Screen, App Library and search results for a Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library that needs Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open
Where does a hidden app still show up?
Apple lists Settings, Apps, Hidden Apps (behind Face ID), Screen Time, Battery, and your App Store purchase history. You can hide the purchase from the App Store list as well, but Apple says it stays in your complete purchase history in Settings
How do I keep a calendar event off the shared family calendar?
Go to Settings, Apps, Calendar, and set Default Calendar to a calendar of your own, so new events land there. An event already on the wrong calendar can be moved: open it, tap Calendar and choose another
Will a reminder about a date show up on my other devices?
If it's in iCloud Reminders, yes. Apple says you see your reminders on every Apple device signed in to the same Apple Account, so a shared iPad or Mac shows it too
Is every note in Notif private?
No, only the notes you mark private. A note that isn't private can be sent, one at a time, to Notif's server and an AI provider to write its Insight, and your notes are never stored on Notif's servers
