A reminder popped up on your Lock Screen in front of someone
A reminder's notification can show its full words on a locked iPhone to anyone looking. The one setting to change is Show Previews for Reminders; here are the other places the same reminder surfaces, from widgets to your Apple Watch
A reminder can show its full words on a locked iPhone, face up on the table, to whoever happens to look. The setting that changes that is Show Previews for Reminders, set to When Unlocked, and it takes a minute. The rest of this page is every other place the same reminder surfaces, because the Lock Screen is only the most obvious one.
"Pick up the gift" lights up at dinner with the person it's for. The reminder did its job; it just did it in front of someone.
Where it shows up
- The Lock Screen, as it arrives. Apple's Lock Screen page says previews can include text from Messages, lines from Mail and details about Calendar invitations; for a reminder, the title is the preview
- Notification Center from the Lock Screen. Swipe up from the middle and earlier notifications are there, if Notification Center is allowed while locked
- Widgets. A Reminders widget on the Lock Screen shows what's coming, and Today View is a swipe away when Today View and Search is on while locked
- Apple Watch. Apple's watch notifications page says notifications appear on your Apple Watch or iPhone, but not both: if the iPhone is locked or asleep, the watch gets them, and a short look shows the app name and the notification title on your wrist
- StandBy. Charging on its side, an iPhone can show widgets full screen, including Reminders
- A Scheduled Summary, with everything else, at the time you set
- Through AirPods. If Announce Notifications is on, Siri reads it; see Siri read your reminder out loud
What to do
- Right now, mute it. Swipe left on the notification, tap Options, then mute Reminders for an hour or a day. Apple's notifications page says this sends them straight to Notification Center, with no Lock Screen, sound, lit screen or banner
- Set Show Previews for Reminders. Go to Settings, tap Notifications, tap Reminders below Notification Style, tap Show Previews and choose When Unlocked or Never. Apple's notification settings page says you can set this per app or, under Settings, Notifications, Show Previews, for all apps. The alert still arrives on time; the words wait until the phone is unlocked. Do the same for any other reminders app you use
- Or keep reminders off the Lock Screen altogether. On the same Reminders screen, under Alerts, turn off Lock Screen and leave Notification Center and Banners on. Then, under Allow Access When Locked in Settings, Face ID & Passcode, turn off Notification Center so the swipe-up list waits for your face; Apple's Lock Screen features page says that stops someone with your iPhone from seeing the personal information in it, at the cost of your own quick access
- Take the widget off. Touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, then tap the widgets to change or remove the Reminders one; Apple's custom Lock Screen page walks through it. For Today View, turn off Today View and Search under Allow Access When Locked, per Apple's widgets page
- Use a Focus for the evening. Go to Settings, tap Focus, pick one, tap Apps, then Silence Notifications From, and add Reminders; Apple's Focus notifications page has the steps, and the Focus's Options decide whether silenced notifications show on the Lock Screen at all. Apple's Focus setup page also links a Lock Screen to a Focus, so a plain one with no widgets comes on with it
- Check your Apple Watch. In the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, then Notifications, and turn on Tap to Show Full Notification; Apple's page says the details then appear only when you tap. Turn off Show Summary When Locked to drop the short look on a locked watch. To keep reminders off the wrist entirely, scroll to Mirror iPhone Alerts From and turn off Reminders. On the watch, Apple's watchOS guide says notifications stay hidden while your wrist is down unless Show Notifications on Wrist Down is on
- Mind StandBy. Apple's StandBy page describes widgets, photos and clocks full screen while charging, with no notification switch of its own. On a nightstand other people see, swipe to the clock or photos view, or turn StandBy off under Settings, StandBy
The catches
- When Unlocked follows your face. With Attention Aware Features on (Settings, Accessibility, Face ID & Attention), Apple's Face ID page says iPhone checks for attention before expanding a notification when locked. Glance at the phone with someone beside you and the preview opens for both
- Muting is for the whole app. An hour or a day of silence covers every reminder, not the one that embarrassed you
- A summary or a Focus is not a reminder. Scheduled Summary holds the notification until the summary time and a Focus silences it. Use them for evenings, not for the reminder that has to land at 3 p.m.
- Your watch has its own settings. When the iPhone is locked, the watch is where the reminder goes, so the Apple Watch app matters as much as Settings
- It's every reminder or none. Apple Reminders has no per-reminder switch; previews, widgets and summaries apply to the whole app. Locking the app with Require Face ID (iOS 18 and later) adds one thing, per Apple's lock an app page: information inside a locked app won't appear in notification previews
- Unlocked means whoever has the passcode. If that isn't only you, start with your partner knows your iPhone passcode
Where Notif fits
The setting people want here is per reminder, not per app, and Apple Reminders doesn't have it. That gap is what I built Notif's private notes for: you mark the one note private and leave Show Previews alone for the rest. The box below says exactly what private means today, straight from the app. Notif is free on the App Store: get Notif.
Questions
How do I stop a reminder showing its text on the Lock Screen?
Go to Settings, tap Notifications, tap Reminders below Notification Style, tap Show Previews and choose When Unlocked or Never. Apple says When Unlocked shows previews only after iPhone is unlocked, and Never keeps them off the Lock Screen entirely
Will the reminder still arrive on time if previews are set to When Unlocked?
Yes. The alert arrives when it's due; only the words wait until the phone is unlocked. Scheduled Summary and Focus are different: they hold or silence the notification, so a time-based reminder arrives late or not at all
Why did my reminder show on my Apple Watch instead of my iPhone?
Apple says notifications appear on your Apple Watch or iPhone, but not both: when the iPhone is locked or asleep, the watch gets them. In the Apple Watch app, Tap to Show Full Notification keeps the details hidden until you tap, and Show Summary When Locked can be turned off
Can I take reminders off the Lock Screen but keep them in Notification Center?
Yes. In Settings, Notifications, Reminders, under Alerts, turn off Lock Screen and leave Notification Center on. If you also turn off Notification Center under Allow Access When Locked, the list can't be read until the phone is unlocked
Is every note in Notif private?
No, only the notes you mark private. A note that isn't private can be sent, one at a time, to Notif's server and an AI provider to write its Insight, and your notes are never stored on Notif's servers
