Your reminders show up on the family iPad or Mac
A device signed in to your Apple Account shows all of your reminders. How to stop it on that one device, and the lasting fix: an account for each person, joined by Family Sharing
Your reminders are on the family iPad because the iPad is signed in to your Apple Account, and iCloud puts every reminder on every device signed in to it. You can stop it on the iPad alone in about a minute, by turning off Reminders in the iPad's iCloud settings or signing it out; the lasting fix is an Apple Account for each person in the house, joined up with Family Sharing.
The same goes for the Mac in the kitchen or a hand-me-down iPhone that still carries your account. Apple's Reminders guide says it in one line: you see all of your reminders on all of your Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. A feature when every device is yours; a problem when one of them lives on the coffee table.
Where it shows up
On a shared device signed in to your account, a reminder is in more places than the app:
- The Reminders app, with every list, including Recently Deleted
- The alert itself: Apple's Mac guide says reminder notifications also appear on your Mac and other devices that use the same account, so "pick up the prescription" lands on the iPad's Lock Screen whoever is holding it
- Widgets, Spotlight and Siri on that device, and in iOS 18 and later the Calendar app, which lists scheduled reminders
- An Apple Watch paired to an iPhone on the account (Apple's Watch guide)
- A browser at icloud.com/reminders, signed in to the account (Apple's iCloud guide)
What to do
- Turn off Reminders in iCloud on the shared device. On the iPad: Settings, your name, iCloud, See All, then turn off Reminders. On the Mac: System Settings, your name, iCloud, See All next to Saved to iCloud, then turn off Reminders (on macOS 13.3 to 14 the button is Show All; on 13 to 13.2 the switch is right there). Apple's iCloud guide for Reminders says a device with the feature turned off can't reach your iCloud reminders. It's per device, so your iPhone keeps syncing. Copy anything important first; Apple's page doesn't say what happens to the reminders already on that device
- Or sign the device out of your account entirely. Settings, your name, scroll to the bottom, Sign Out, then Sign Out But Don't Erase (Apple's sign-out page). Cleaner for a device that is really the family's, but it reaches further than reminders: Apple says signing out also signs the device out of the App Store, iMessage and FaceTime, and removes your iCloud data from it unless you keep a copy
- Give each person their own Apple Account. Apple's own advice is to avoid sharing an account, because some of your personal data could be accessible to other family members: sign the family member out of their device, create an account for them, sign in, then set up Family Sharing. Apple's Family Sharing page says up to five family members can share services like iCloud+ and Apple Music without sharing an Apple Account; the organizer must be an adult, and a child under 13 needs a Child Account a parent creates (the age varies by country)
- Share one list, not the account, for what the family really shares. Apple's shared lists page shares a single list with the people you choose, and only that list goes to them
- Until it's sorted, keep alerts off that screen. On the shared device: Settings, Notifications, Reminders, then turn off Allow Notifications or set Show Previews to Never (Apple's notification settings). When Unlocked isn't enough on a device the whole family unlocks
The catches
- The per-device switch is all-or-nothing. Turning off Reminders on the iPad hides all of your lists there, including the one the household uses; share that one list to their account instead
- Signing out takes the rest of iCloud with it. Apple's list of what turns off includes Find My, iCloud Photos, iCloud Keychain, Apple Pay and iCloud Backup. Whoever uses the device next needs an account of their own to download apps
- Family Sharing shares purchases, not reminders. That's the point, but Apple warns that if Family Sharing is ever stopped, the owner of the shared Apple Account keeps all its purchases
- Locking the app on the iPad doesn't help much. Apple's lock an app page says a locked app opens with Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode, and the lock doesn't sync; on a family iPad everyone has the passcode
- What already synced was already there. Deleting a reminder clears it everywhere once it syncs, but Apple keeps deleted reminders in Recently Deleted for 30 days (Reminders guide), on every device on the account

Where Notif fits
Notif is the reminders app I make, and every note in it is a real reminder in Apple Reminders, on Notif's own list, so on a shared account it would turn up on the family iPad like any other reminder; that's why there is a private switch. Mark the note private and that one note is handled apart from the rest, as the box below spells out, while the grocery list keeps syncing to everyone. Only the notes you mark private are private; the rest can be sent, one at a time, to Notif's server and an AI provider to write their Insight. Notif is free on the App Store: get Notif.
Questions
Why do my reminders show up on the family iPad?
Because the iPad is signed in to your Apple Account, and iCloud shows all of your reminders on every device signed in to the same account
How do I stop my reminders syncing to one device without affecting my iPhone?
On that device go to Settings, your name, iCloud, See All, and turn off Reminders. The switch is per device, so your iPhone keeps syncing as before
Does signing the iPad out of my Apple Account delete my reminders?
Your reminders stay in iCloud and on your other devices. Apple says signing out removes your iCloud data from that device unless you choose to keep a copy, and also signs it out of the App Store, iMessage and FaceTime
Will Family Sharing share my reminders with my family?
No. Family Sharing shares purchases, subscriptions and services like iCloud+ without sharing an Apple Account, so each person's reminders stay in their own account. To share a grocery list, share that one list
Do private Notif notes show up on a family iPad?
A note you mark private in Notif is never sent to Notif's server or to any AI, and marking it private takes it out of Apple Reminders, so it isn't among the reminders iCloud carries to other devices. Notes you don't mark private are ordinary reminders and sync like any other
