Siri read your reminder out loud: how to stop it

Siri speaks a reminder through AirPods or Beats when Announce Notifications is on, through an Apple Watch, through a HomePod answering a personal request, and in its own voice when you ask. Here is the switch for each, and what each one doesn't cover

Siri reads a reminder out loud for one of four reasons: Announce Notifications is on and you're wearing AirPods or Beats, the same feature is on for your Apple Watch, a HomePod answered a personal request, or you asked Siri something and it spoke the answer. The switch for the most common one is in Settings, under Notifications, Announce Notifications, and it takes a minute.

The awkward version is in someone else's ear: an AirPod shared across a table, the HomePod in the kitchen, the car's speakers with a passenger. Here is where each one comes from and how to turn it off without losing the rest.

Where it shows up

  • AirPods and Beats. Apple's Announce Notifications page says Siri announces incoming notifications from apps such as Messages and Reminders when you're wearing compatible headphones and your iPhone is locked; if an app marks a notification as time sensitive, Siri plays a tone and reads it automatically. Siri doesn't announce while you're using the phone
  • Apple Watch. With AirPods or Beats paired to the watch, Apple's watchOS page says Siri can read incoming notifications without unlocking your iPhone, and "Read my notifications" has Siri read Notification Center through the watch speaker or headphones. Apple's Siri on Apple Watch page adds that Siri on the watch speaks its answers as it does on iPhone
  • HomePod. Apple's personal requests page lists "What's on my shopping list?", "Remind me to call Mom on Tuesday" and "Mark 'water the plants' as complete" as things Siri handles on HomePod when Personal Content is on, out loud, in the room
  • CarPlay. Apple's CarPlay page covers Announce Messages, which reads incoming messages aloud, and notes that the Dashboard's Siri Suggestions can show things like your Calendar events on the car's screen
  • Siri on the phone. Ask "what are my reminders" and Siri answers in its voice unless you've set it to respond silently

What to do

  1. Turn Announce Notifications off, or off for Reminders only. Go to Settings, tap Notifications, then Announce Notifications. Apple's page says the top switch turns the feature on or off; below it are the apps Siri can announce, and Apple walks through the choices for Messages. Turn off Reminders, or whichever reminders app you use, and Messages carries on. Apple also says you can add Announce Notifications to Control Center and switch it off from there
  2. Stop one mid-sentence. Apple's advice: take out one earbud or remove the headphones, and Siri stops announcing
  3. Do the same on Apple Watch. Open Settings on the watch, go to Siri, then Announce Notifications, and turn it off or scroll down and tap the apps you want announced; Apple's watchOS page adds that the Control Center button on the watch pauses it, and that saying "Stop" or "Cancel" ends a reading
  4. Turn off Personal Content on HomePod. Apple's HomePod Siri page says to open the Home app, tap the More button, tap Home Settings, tap your name under People, then tap Personal Content and turn it off for the HomePod speakers you don't want answering. Apple notes you get a notification on your iPhone whenever Siri responds to a personal content request, which is how you'd know it happened
  5. Sort out the car. Under Settings, Notifications, Announce Notifications, tap CarPlay and turn off Announce Messages; Apple's CarPlay page describes the same switch in CarPlay's own Settings. There, Apple's CarPlay settings page says you can also turn Suggestions off and set the Driving Focus to Activate With CarPlay, which silences or limits notifications while you drive. On iOS 18 and later, locking your reminders app with Require Face ID keeps its information out of CarPlay, per Apple's lock an app page
  6. Make Siri answer quietly. Go to Settings, tap Siri, tap Responses and choose Prefer Silent Responses; on iOS 18 the menu is Siri Responses, under Spoken Responses. Apple's Siri settings page also offers Always Show Siri Captions so you can read the answer instead, and on iOS 18 the same screen has Allow Siri When Locked, which when off stops Siri taking requests on a locked phone

The catches

  • "Locked" is the trigger, not the protection. Announce Notifications speaks only when the phone is locked and you're wearing the headphones; it's quiet while you're using the phone. Whoever is wearing your AirPods hears it
  • Time sensitive goes first. Apple says a notification an app marks as time sensitive is announced automatically after a tone, so a reminder that's due now is exactly what gets read
  • HomePod is a room, not a device. Personal Content runs through voice recognition in your Home, but the answer comes out of a speaker everyone can hear
  • CarPlay's switch is for messages. Apple describes Announce Messages for texts; for other apps the levers are the Driving Focus and locking the app
  • Silent Siri still shows the words. Prefer Silent Responses stops the voice, and the reminder appears on screen instead
  • Two devices, two switches. The watch and the iPhone each have an Announce Notifications setting; Apple's watch page says you can turn it on from either, so check both
  • It's every reminder or none. Apple Reminders has no per-reminder switch, so each setting here covers the whole app. More in private reminders on iPhone

Where Notif fits

Siri reading a reminder is a notifications problem, and the switches above are the real fix. What I can add is per note rather than per app: in Notif, the reminders app I make on Apple Reminders, you mark that one note private, leave Announce Notifications alone for everything else, and the box below says exactly what private covers today. Notif is free on the App Store: get Notif.

Questions

Why did Siri read my reminder through my AirPods?

Announce Notifications was on. Apple says that when you're wearing compatible AirPods or Beats and your iPhone is locked, Siri announces incoming notifications from apps such as Messages and Reminders. Turn it off, or turn off Reminders alone, under Settings, Notifications, Announce Notifications

Can I keep Siri announcing messages but not reminders?

Yes. Under Settings, Notifications, Announce Notifications, the apps that can be announced are listed below the main switch, so turn off Reminders and leave Messages on. On Apple Watch the list is under Settings, Siri, Announce Notifications

Can a HomePod read my reminders to someone else in the room?

With Personal Content on, Siri on HomePod answers requests like "What's on my shopping list?" out loud. Apple's switch is in the Home app under Home Settings, your name in the People section, then Personal Content, and Apple says your iPhone gets a notification whenever Siri answers a personal request

Does Siri read reminders aloud in CarPlay?

Apple's CarPlay page describes Announce Messages, which reads incoming messages, and the Driving Focus, which silences or limits notifications in the car. For a reminders app, locking it with Require Face ID keeps its information out of CarPlay, according to Apple's lock an app page

Is every note in Notif private?

No, only the notes you mark private. A note that isn't private can be sent, one at a time, to Notif's server and an AI provider to write its Insight, and your notes are never stored on Notif's servers
