Notif vs Apple Reminders (2026): what each does, and why you can use both
Apple Reminders keeps the list. Notif keeps its notes in Apple Reminders and adds something worth knowing and the next step to each one
Apple Reminders is where most iPhone to-dos live. It's free, it's already on every Apple device you own, and it's good at the job it was built for: holding the list and telling you when. I make Notif, so read this knowing that. I built it on top of Reminders, not against it, and for most people the honest answer is to use both.

What Apple Reminders does well
Reminders is better than it gets credit for. It can alert you when you arrive somewhere or leave, or when you're messaging a particular person. Lists have sections, subtasks, tags and flags, and smart lists pull them together. You can share a list and assign items to people. Grocery lists sort themselves into sections like produce and dairy, and with Apple Intelligence it can suggest reminders from an email or a recipe and sort a list for you. It's on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, and it costs nothing.
What it doesn't do is look at what you wrote. A reminder says what you told it, when you told it to, and that's where it stops.
What Notif adds
Notif looks at one note at a time and adds three things:
- Insight, something worth knowing about what you wrote
- Action Button, the next step: call a contact, get directions, link to a site or open the app
- Chat, to ask anything and learn more about what's in your note
Two real ones, straight from the app. "Book a table at Sistina" came back with call well ahead since prime weekend times fill up fast, and a button that opens Sistina's page on OpenTable. "Dinner at Lucali Friday night" came back with Lucali doesn't take reservations and only accepts cash, so plan to line up early, and directions.
The rest will feel familiar. Say a note to Siri and it lands without opening anything. A list with commas becomes a checklist you can tick. Notif asks once who "Mom" is, then remembers. And the weather only speaks up when there's a real chance of rain or snow on your day.
How they work together
Notif writes to one list of its own in Apple Reminders, called Notifs, and never touches your other lists. That list syncs through iCloud like any other, so a note you write on your iPhone is on your Mac and your Apple Watch too, and you can tick it off wherever you are. Add a reminder to the Notifs list from another device and it can get an Insight as well. If you stop using Notif, the notes stay in Reminders.
Which should you use?
- Your list is fine and you only need the alert: Apple Reminders
- You want the hours, the booking link or the forecast on the note itself: Notif, on top of Reminders
- You rely on location alerts or shared family lists: Reminders for those, Notif for the rest. They sit side by side
