Why Apple Reminders don't remind you (and how to fix it)

When Apple Reminders stays quiet, it's almost always one of a few settings, or a reminder that never had a time to fire on. Here's how to find which one, in the order worth checking

Apple Reminders usually doesn't remind you for one of two reasons: the reminder never had anything to fire on (no time, no date, no location), or your iPhone is holding the alert back through a notification setting, a Scheduled Summary or a Focus. Both take a minute to check once you know where to look.

Below is the order I'd check things in, from the most common cause to the rarest. I make a reminders app, Notif, that keeps its notes in Apple Reminders, so I've spent more time in these settings than most people. Everything here is about Apple's own app and works whether or not you use mine.

1. Check the reminder itself

Before touching Settings, open the reminder that didn't go off and look under the title.

  • No date or time. A reminder with no date, no time and no location is just a line on a list. It will sit there quietly forever. This is the most common cause by far, especially for reminders added in a hurry
  • A date but no time. Apple's Reminders guide says that if you set a due date without a time, the notification appears at 9:00 AM by default. If you were expecting it in the afternoon, that's why it came "early" or got buried in the morning
  • A location instead of a time. A location reminder fires when you arrive or leave, not at a time. It also needs Location Services on: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services
  • Already done. A reminder you ticked off, even by accident, won't notify. Check the completed items in the list

If the reminder has a date and a specific time and still stayed silent, the problem is in Settings.

2. Make sure Reminders is allowed to notify you

Go to Settings > Notifications > Reminders.

  • Allow Notifications should be on. If it's off, nothing from Reminders will ever show up
  • Lock Screen, Notification Center and Banners should be on, so the alert actually appears somewhere you'll see it
  • Sounds on, if you want to hear it as well as see it

While you're here, change the default time for all-day reminders if 9 AM doesn't suit you. Apple puts that in a different place: Settings > Apps > Reminders, then tap the time below All-Day Reminders.

3. Take Reminders out of your Scheduled Summary

Scheduled Summary gathers notifications from the apps you pick and delivers them together at set times. It's useful for news apps. It's bad for reminders, because "pay the Apple Card bill at 2 p.m." turns into "a list of things in your 6 p.m. summary".

Apple's notification settings guide covers both fixes:

  • Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, and turn Reminders off in the list of apps, or
  • Settings > Notifications > Reminders, and under Notification Delivery choose Immediate Delivery

If you don't use Scheduled Summary, you won't see the Notification Delivery option, and you can skip this step.

4. Check your Focus

A Focus (Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Work and the rest) silences every app that isn't on its allowed list. If your reminders vanish only at certain times of day, or only at work, a Focus is the likely cause, and it may be turning on by itself on a schedule.

Apple's Focus guide gives two ways through:

  • In Settings > Focus, pick the Focus, tap Apps, then add Reminders under Allow Notifications From
  • In the same place, turn on Time Sensitive Notifications, which lets apps send time-sensitive notifications immediately

Then go back to Settings > Notifications > Reminders and make sure Time Sensitive Notifications is on there too. Apple's guide describes this as a per-app switch, so it needs to be on for the app as well as allowed by the Focus.

If you use Apple Intelligence, the same guide notes that Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing lets important notifications through and silences ones it decides aren't important. If a reminder you cared about stayed quiet during a Focus, adding Reminders to the allowed apps takes the guessing out of it.

5. Use Urgent for the ones you can't miss

Some reminders shouldn't depend on a banner: pick up the kids, leave for the airport, move the car before the street sweeper. For those, Apple added Urgent reminders in iOS 26.2.

According to Apple's Reminders guide, when you turn on Urgent under Date & Time, Reminders schedules an alarm for when the reminder is due, and the alarm goes off even when the phone is silenced or a Focus is on. Three things have to be in place:

  • Reminders can use alarms. In Settings, tap Reminders and turn on Alarms under Allow Reminders to Access
  • iCloud Reminders is set up. Apple says you need it to mark reminders as urgent
  • The right device. The alarm only goes off on the device Find My uses as your location. If it rings on your iPad in the other room, open Find My, tap Me, and check which device is sharing your location

Use it sparingly. An alarm for every reminder is a fast way to start ignoring alarms.

6. If it's still quiet

If a reminder with a time, on a phone with notifications allowed, outside any Focus, still doesn't go off:

  • Restart the iPhone. It's dull advice, and it sometimes clears a stuck notification
  • Check iCloud. If reminders you add on your Mac never show up on your iPhone, they can't notify you there. In Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, and make sure Reminders is on
  • Update iOS. Settings > General > Software Update
  • Shared lists. Apple lets you turn notifications on or off for shared lists, so if only reminders from a shared family list stay silent, check that list's notification setting

When it reminds you and you still don't do it

Once the alert works, a different problem often shows up. The reminder goes off right on time, you look at it, and you swipe it away, because "renew the passport" still has a question in it: which form, which website, what photo size. A louder alert doesn't fix that.

That's the part I built Notif for. It's a reminders app for iPhone and iPad, and every note is a real reminder in Apple Reminders, in its own list, so all the settings above still apply to it. What it adds is on the note itself: an Insight, one line worth knowing about what you wrote, and an Action Button for the next step, like calling a contact, getting directions or opening the right site. Chat lets you ask more about what's in the note.

Notif is free, with one Insight a day and 14 Chat answers a week. Notif Pro puts an Insight on every note, makes Chat unlimited and adds private notes, for $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, cancel any time. There's no account, and your notes are never stored on Notif's servers.

If your trouble is getting the alert at all, you don't need another app. Work through the steps above and Apple Reminders will do its job. If your trouble is what happens after the alert, the best reminder apps for ADHD covers a few different approaches, and Notif vs Apple Reminders explains how the two work together. Questions

Why didn't my iPhone remind me about a reminder?

The most common reasons are that the reminder has no date, time or location to fire on, Reminders notifications are turned off or held in a Scheduled Summary, or a Focus is silencing them. Check the reminder first, then Settings > Notifications > Reminders

Why do my all-day reminders come at 9 AM?

A reminder with a date but no time notifies at 9:00 AM by default. You can change that time in Settings > Apps > Reminders, under All-Day Reminders

How do I make a reminder go off when my iPhone is on silent?

Since iOS 26.2 you can turn on Urgent under Date & Time for a reminder. Reminders then schedules an alarm that goes off even when the phone is silenced or a Focus is on, as long as Reminders is allowed to use alarms and iCloud Reminders is set up

Do Focus modes block Reminders notifications?

They can. A Focus silences apps that aren't on its allowed list. Add Reminders under Apps > Allow Notifications From in that Focus, or turn on Time Sensitive Notifications so time-sensitive alerts get through

Why does my urgent reminder alarm go off on the wrong device?

Apple says urgent reminder alarms only activate on the device Find My uses as your location. Open Find My, tap Me, and check which device is sharing your location
