Notif for iPhone and iPad

Private notes

What happens to a note you mark private, from where it's kept to what your Lock Screen shows

Where it lives

A private note stays inside Notif. Marking it private takes it out of Apple Reminders, and it is never written there again

Private notes are encrypted on your iPhone with AES-256. A private note is never sent to Notif's server or to any AI. That's why it never gets an Insight

Opening it

Opening a private note asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode

Tap it on your board and Notif asks first. On an iPhone with no passcode set there is nothing to ask for, so it opens like any other note

On your Lock Screen

A private note's alerts never show its words on your Lock Screen

A heads-up says only when it's due, like “A private note is due tomorrow”, and the alert on the day says “A private note is due”, with no button. Opening Notif is what shows which note

On a new iPhone

The key lives in your iCloud Keychain — keep it on, and private notes come with you to a new iPhone

Turn iCloud Keychain off in Settings and a new iPhone can't open them

Make a note private

  1. Open a note you wrote in Notif
  2. Turn on Private
  3. It leaves Apple Reminders, and its Insight goes away, since nothing about it reaches our server any more

Marking a note private is part of Notif Pro. Reminders that came from Apple Reminders or Calendar can't be made private here, because they already live in Apple's apps

The fine print

Like the rest of Notif's data, a private note's encrypted copy is part of your iPhone's own backup if you back up to iCloud or a computer

Notes you don't mark private can go to our server for their Insight. The privacy policy says exactly what goes and when, and support has the rest
